Let me start by saying that I use Young Living Essential Oils. This is the only brand that I trust for myself, my family, and my dog. This is a company I have come to believe in and that I am independent distributor for. I do not use them lightly on any of us. I do a lot of research before using a drop. I have been building a personal library of resources to help guide me in my use of YL essential oils. The main one for human use is the EOPR (Essential Oils Pocket Reference) and the main one for my dog is the Animal Desk Reference (ADR) . The ADR was written by a vet who used all different methods of care for her clients but only used Young Living oils for her oil therapy recommendations. Her book guides owners in their use of YL essential oils with their pets. She covers everything from how to choose the oils best for the condition, how to apply, and how to get your pet accustomed to the oils. She goes over each individual oil, blend, and supplement they offered when the book was written and how or why they can be used for your pet.
I use essential oils in and on my dog daily. I believe these are essential to her health. BUT, and this will always be an important but in anything I say about using oils for your pet's health, your pet's doctor should always be involved. Always! He or she may not agree with the idea of essential oils but you still need to indicate that you are using them. Just like when you go to the doctor and give the list of supplements and medications you are currently taking. It makes the doctor aware and helps him or her work more effectively for your pet’s health.
The oils I choose for Lexi’s health are based largely on the one book I mentioned above, the ADR. Trial and error is never fun with someone you love. By investing in the book, I was making the choice to avoid this as much as possible. It has proven very helpful.
Currently I am working with two vets to help Lexi. One is all about pharmaceuticals while the other wants to do less pharmaceutical and more natural. Why do we have two? Unfortunately, the more all-natural vet is not always accessible and she is the only one in the area. So for our emergency and military compliance needs (they have their own requirements for animal health) we need the other. I have spoken with the non-natural vet about the oils and have seen him turn his nose up at the thought of it. However, I have also seen his wonder and amazement at the result of using oils vs. his recommendation. I am very open with him about my desire to try my oils first when it is not an urgent issue. He is always happy to let me try. Again, this is only when it is not an urgent issue.
Lexi’s health is a huge part of my overall Fur-Parent responsibility. I firmly believe vets are a necessary part of her care. They have the education and the experience I will never have. There are a lot of times when their gift to the animal world is vital. Finding one that will work with you and the oils is worth the effort. But, please, don’t knock the vet you have now just because they don’t fully support your desire to find a more natural health route. Educate them, nicely. They like to see actual results because they do love the animals they care for. Start with the little things that you would not run to the vet for, like I did when Lexi got scratched by a bush. Take pictures of before and after. Make note of the oil, dilution ratio, and frequency of application. At your next vet visit, share your excitement in a positive manner. Sure, you may get that odd look of “Uh huh.” But a seed being planted and I bet that vet will be encouraged because you are keeping them in the loop of all you do to care for your pet. You may even get them to ask more questions about these oils.
What I have just written above is my precursor to sharing the things I have done and am doing with my dog Lexi. There are no blanket statements like “For this issue, do this, with this oil.” Animals are just like people in the fact that they are each different. One oil that Lexi likes and helps her may not hold true for your dog with the same problem. There are always multiple oils for a specific issue.
If you have any questions, just ask. The discovery of the healthful benefits of Young Living Essential Oils in our life is worth sharing. It was from one person sharing their successes with them that has me here, writing to you about our successes. Here’s hoping we can bring success with oils into your life, too.
