By Melissa MacLean
From Sarah: Please welcome Melissa MacLean to our blog family. Melissa and I were friends long ago when we were at Rochester High School in Michigan. We reconnected on Facebook recently. Melissa has only been using oils for a few months, but she will be sharing her successes with them, especially when it comes to her battle with fibromyalgia. Thanks for joining us, Melissa!
Most of you know (who doesn't know?) that I suffer from Fibromyalgia. Part of having fibro is the inability to get good, deep sleep at night. The disease prevents it for some reason. I can stay asleep for 12 hours, but wake up not feeling rested. Years and years of this takes its toll on a person. Add in the near constant muscle aches/pains and it isn't fun. Around the holidays this year I turned to essential oils for help. Now I am not a person who minds taking medicine; quite the contrary, I am happy to take something to alleviate an issue that I have. I have scripts for pain medication, muscle relaxers, and sleeping pills. The trouble was, the stuff for pain did nothing to alleviate it. The sleeping pills would most of the time put me to sleep, but I still woke feeling un-rested. It was maddening! I needed relief; I was at the end of my rope.
In come Young Living Essential Oils. The first night I put a dab of oil (Peace & Calming and Lavender) behind my ears to sleep, I quickly fell into a restful sleep. A deeper sleep than I had in years (I even drooled). I woke thinking “Whoa, what was that?” I felt energized during the day – which is NOT normal for me. I tried it again the next night and had another good night’s sleep. Very strange indeed. So that made me very curious. I started to look further into these oils and what they could possibly do to help me.
I admit, the cost of the kit was my stumbling block. As a newly divorced mom of two, basically supporting us all alone, money is an issue. But I vowed to myself that I was going to get healthier, and I needed to find a better way to manage this disease. After a lot of thinking, I took a leap and ordered the kit. I am so glad that I did! My sleep has improved tremendously since I started using the oils. I sleep deeper than I have in more than a decade. When I wake up, I don’t feel like I need to lie in bed longer. I start my day feeling rested, which gives me more energy and better focus throughout the day. I am not going to bed earlier, or getting more hours of sleep, but better quality sleep. It feels absolutely fantastic. Even my mother (whom I did not tell I was using oils) said that the ever-present dark circles under my eyes were looking better – she wanted to know what new concealer I was using. LOL.
Before YL oils, I used to use Ambien at least once a week and usually more often. Using Ambien used to really worry me: would there come a day when I just would not wake up? What are the cumulative effects of these chemicals on your body? Since getting my kit in January, I have not taken one Ambien. Typically I will diffuse a couple oils at night, but not always the same ones. I like to mix it up. The blends also have helped to calm my two cats and help them sleep through the night instead of prowling around meowing (Neville, I’m talking about you!). Some of the oils I will diffuse are Peace & Calming, Lavender, Cedarwood, Frankincense, and Stress Away. Here’s the weirdest part: I don’t always diffuse or apply oils at night. But even the nights that I don’t, I am still getting better sleep!
I am so thankful that I made the leap and tried these oils. My health is already getting better and I can’t wait to see how much better it can be. If you have ever suffered from insomnia or lack of quality sleep, you understand how debilitating it is, and how cumulative years of that take a toll on your health. Sleep is a precious commodity that your body needs to function; and when you don’t get it, it will wreak havoc on your life. I am far from a “crunchy”/health nut type of girl, but I do feel much better and safer putting natural, therapeutic-grade, essential oils in my body instead of potentially harmful chemicals. These oils are amazing and have given me a part of my life back that I had learned to live without.
