We moved from Washington State to Markttriebendorf, Germany in 2013 for a job with the Army. I was new to Young Living Essential Oils, but was fascinated by the books I bought to educate myself on the use of oils on pets. My 8-year-old German shepherd has a ton of health issues, mainly due to her poor immune system. Yet, until the vet here in Germany mentioned it, we were only treating her outward symptoms, one of which was skin related. She would get these weird spots that would look brown at first, become scabby and itchy, and then disappeared. They always came back though. Thus began my research on which oil would help best with her skin issues.
The Animal Desk Reference (ADR) led me to Sacred Frankincense. I began using it a little at a time. I eventually increased to three drops twice a day in a capsule. Her skin began to look amazing. The weird scab things did not return and her fur was beautiful. But of course, another problem was not far behind.
Young Living has a few oils that are on a “Cannot ship” list. Customs will not allow certain oils that are considered combustible, dangerous, or flammable to be shipped via priority mail. To ship Parcel Post often takes 30+ days. Sacred Frank was on that list. Devastated, I began calling and asking tons of questions. I was led to member services right here in Germany. They told me that I could buy via the European branch. Sounded perfect at first. Then, I discovered I would need to switch my American Young Living account to a German one with my German address. Not as easy as it sounds. When my billing address did not match my mailing address (both have our APO military address) the credit card company got involved. No go.
I decided to pore over my Animal Desk Reference (ADR) to see what alternatives might be available. BINGO! Under supplements, I discovered Longevity. It is also an oil blend. The book lists Longevity among a few other oil blends that are used “to gain the medical benefits of Frankincense.” Aha! But oh no. It was out of stock. (Here is a great video on why some YL oils may go out of stock. I love Young Living’s integrity and respect for the earth). My search continued until I found Believe.
There are two versions of Believe, the old and the new. The ADR addresses the old one, so I had to do a little digging. The ADR suggests that you to research what each oil within a blend has to offer. If the oil blends have been used on dogs there are guidelines for their use. The newer version of the Believe includes a lot of oils, so I had a lot of research ahead of me. In the end, it paid off. Frankincense is in Believe! Not the Sacred Frankincense, but the ADR does state they are both great for skin issues. Once I researched all the other oils in the Believe blend, I was ready to order it. I even ordered two!
When my oil arrived, I started the process of introducing it to Lexi slowly, starting with one drop in a capsule twice a day and working up to three drops twice a day. So much about her was better. She was more relaxed and calm, seemed more open to trying new things as opposed to being super anxious about them, and she appeared more focused on me. In a good way. Like she was watching for my next instruction. Her skin looked fine, no decline from stopping the Sacred Frankincense. So we were happy with this.
I like to research and I love my ADR. I kept exploring what other things were available to help her. I had a consult with her doctor to discuss getting to the root cause of her issues. Immune system was to be our main focus and not the symptoms. Frankincense was still number one for helping her because it covers this as well. But I didn’t think she needed all the oils contained within the Believe blend and the doctor agreed. So we researched Longevity again. I was all set to go with capsules because they had been back in stock recently but just as I went to order it, I discovered the oil blend was available again. I ordered two!
Now why would I order the oil blend and go through all the trouble of making my own capsules when I could just purchase the Longevity capsules? The average number of drops in a 15ml bottle is 250. In a bottle of premade capsules of Longevity (three drops of the oil blend in each) you get 30 capsules. My goal was to get her to two caps a day per the ADR recommendations for her weight and issues. I would need two bottles of premade capsules to get through a month. The oil blend would last about 40 days at three drops twice a day and is a little bit less expensive. I know I have the premade capsules to fall back on if the oil blend goes out of stock.
So far we have had great success with Longevity. Her skin looks great, her itchiness is non-existent. Our current goal with her is weaning her off some high powered antibiotics without having her anal fistulas come back. So far so good.
I wanted to write about finding Frank because it opened my eyes to how little I knew about the oils. I love Young Living Essential Oils, but I want to use them properly and responsibly. I love my Lexi and I do not want to practice trial and error on her. Especially when it is totally avoidable. Research is so crucial in helping those we love and care about to reap the health benefits of these precious oils.
I would love to hear all about the discoveries you are making on the road to better health with Young Living Essential Oils. Sharing to educate benefits us all.
